First Lutheran Church praises God through music.
"I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted." ~Exodus 15:1b

The hymnal used in most worship services is the Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW). The Inter-Lutheran Church Commission on Worship had a number of goals in mind while developing the hymnal, including:

First Lutheran also uses Hymnal Supplement 1991 and With One Voice which contain many contemporary hymns as well as old favorites not found in the ELW.

Through the years the church has been blessed with many dedicated and talented choir directors and organists. Many times the same person filled both positions.

In consultation with the pastor, Denny, Karen & Kris select music for each worship service that provides a link to the Bible lessons and the Gospel. The service music reinforces the Word and the Sacrament in worship.

Denny Pearson, Director of Choirs

Since September 1983, Denise (Denny) Pearson has served as director of choirs. Her love of music is contagious, not only with the choir and congregation, but also with her daughter Kate, a talented organist graduate of Oberlin College and a member of The Organ Pump Committee.

We welcome Karen Schmitt back to Warren who previously served as our organist for 20 years.

"Martin Luther once said that music is the handmaid of the Word of God. I didn’t know that when my mother insisted that I start to study the piano at the age of 4 years. I also didn’t know that, when at 12 years I began to play the organ at Peace Lutheran, my home church. Now, so many years later, I know the gospel echoing in music can awaken the souls of those who listen and strengthen the heart.

The years have found me at Zion Lutheran, Greensburg, Pa., Our Savior Lutheran, North Huntingdon, Pa, the Kane Episcopal Church, Kane, Pa, and last but defiantly not least, 20 years at First Lutheran, Warren, Pa. Outside musical interests include playing the piano for several All County Musicals, the Riverside Chamber Orchestra and the Philomel Club.

God has richly blessed me in so many ways. The greatest is the privilege of serving Him through the ministry of music. "

~ Karen Schmitt

Karen Schmitt & Kris Soderberg take turns on the organ bench.

Kris Soderberg completed the Leadership for Musicians two year program of study and has been an active member of our choir for years. St. John's members miss her worship music where she served for several years as part-time organist/pianist.
